PRESS RELEASE
Skier and Boarder Cross returns to Scotland on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th March 2011 with the second Western Saab Challenge, Scottish Snowcross Championships. This two day event, organised by Aberdeen Snowsports Club, heads to Glenshee Ski Centre for what is sure to be an action packed, adrenaline fuelled event.
Sponsored by Saab and supported by Salomon, Zaini Hats, Red Bull, Tierney Strachan and, of course, Glenshee Ski Centre, the event is the only one of its kind to be held in the United Kingdom.
At last year’s event nearly 100 competitors from all over Scotland raced head to head in an adrenalin and action packed knockout race along a course consisting of man-made and natural rollers, jumps, kickers and banked turns, all at high speed.
This year Aberdeen Snowsports Club are delighted to have the support of Olympians Alain Baxter and Ben Kilner who will be both be attending the event to support the riders and award prizes!
Former Olympic Skier and BBC wintersports pundit Alain Baxter added: “Last year’s Championships were a great addition to the Scottish and British snow sports scene and it is fantastic to see such a prestigious sport coming to the UK. It is also great to see the continued support from Saab who were a key supporter of Scottish skiing during my development and their support is really important to Scottish and British Snowsports. I can’t wait to see the action at Glenshee for myself and absolutely delighted to support Aberdeen Snowsports Club with the Western Saab Scottish Snowcross Championships”
Local rider and Olympic Snowboard Super-pipe finalist in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics Ben Kilner said: “Snowcross is a great event and I’m stoked that Aberdeen Snowsports Club have brought this to Glenshee where I learned to ride all those years ago! It’s really exciting for spectators and competitors alike, bringing together alpine and freestyle skiers and boarders in the same event.”
This year’s event promises to be even better than 2010. With age categories of 8-11, 12-15, 16-29 and 30+ there is a definite opportunity for all to compete.
Aberdeen Snowsports Club Chairman, Neil Cameron, said “Ski and Boarder Cross was the event of the Vancouver Olympics and one that captured the imagination of snowsports enthusiasts and the general public. Having secured our position in the snowsports calendar we look forward to building on that success and bringing even more alpine skiers, snowboarders and freestyle skiers to the sport.”
Club Chair, Neil, also said, “Once again 2011 is proving to be a great season in Scotland and with the earliest opening in years at the Scottish Ski Resorts, the Western Saab Challenge, Scottish Snowcross Championships is sure to be an action packed, furious and fun weekend”.
“We are also delighted to have the support of all of our sponsors, especially Glenshee who have specially prepared the course with our team, moving hundreds of tons of snow with their piste grooming machines. Once again the purpose built starting gates have been provided by Maritime Scaffolding of Aberdeen, a firm that specialises in building such structures in harsh environments.”
