When lots and lots of snow caused the slopestyle competition at the 2011 Roxy Chicken Jam at Mammoth Mountain to be cancelled, the event organizers got creative. The Roxy Powder Jam was a one day video competition sponsored by GoPro.
“This year’s Chicken Jam was a bit of a surprise for all of us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen weather conditions less ideal for a contest,’’ said Amber Stackhouse, Roxy Snow Team Manager. “Despite the weather, everyone loves riding powder with friends so we rolled with the punches and made use of the record snowfall for our first ever powder jam.”
Each of three riders was given a GoPro cam and asked to do a line, jib and an air in the video. The videos were judged on on technical difficulty, execution and overall impression and creativity on a panel including Christian Sieverts, Mauricio Natario, MJ Bourgeois, and Jeff Brushie.
The winning pro team was Ty Walker, Erin Comstock and Kimmy Fasani. Fourteen year old Ty won $5000 for her first place trick – a cab 540 into powder. The winning Am team was Mariah Dugan, Natsuki Sato and Michelle Zeller. An award also went to the team of Torah Bright, Chanelle Sladics, and Celia Miller for the funniest video. The judges must have been amused by seeing the ladies shove a cupcake in Todd Richards' face during a live webcast.
