Mammoth Mountain Ski Area announced yesterday that June Mountain would not open for summer and would remain closed for the 2012-2013 winter season. The past snowless winter hit California resorts hard.
“June has operated at an annual deficit each year since its purchase in 1986,” said Rusty Gregory, Mammoth Mountain Chariman and CEO. “It is time to invest some of this subsidy into the analysis and planning required to position the resort for a sustainable future, then secure the approvals and financing required to create it.”
Mammoth purchased June in 1986 with plans to extend runs from Mammoth into June Lake Village, but this never panned out.
According to June Mountain’s websites all summer weddings and events will go on as planned.
