Snowsports Industries of America (SIA) has released their 2012 Particiption Report, and it’s got some interesting stats. Last winter was a terrible snow season for most of the United States so it’s not a huge surprise that overall snowsports participation fell from 21 million to 19.8 million.
Snowboarding participation fell 8% down to 7.6 million, but that was less than the 11% drop that skiing saw.
Here are some fun facts from the report:
- 60% of snowboarders reside in these 10 states: CA, NY, IL, PA, NJ, WA, MI, CO, WI, and VA
- 37% of snowboarders have an annual income of $100,000 or more (50% for skiers)
- Snowboarders burned 109,137,600 calories while riding last season
The 2012 Participation Report is based on surveys of 38,500 households in a partnership between SIA and the Physical Activities Council. You can learn more about the 2012 Participation Report here.
