Spring in November at Mammoth Mountain

As the first resort open in California, Mammoth Mountain started up Broadway Express lift on November 3, over a week ahead of scheduled opening day. For the mountain’s “official” opening celebration two weeks later, Mammoth had up to four feet of snow on the slopes.

Friday night of opening weekend consisted of a huge collective of Mammoth locals, industry kids, and friends out at the bars to kick the weekend off right. With a Volcom party at Whisky Creek and Monster hosting free drinks at Lakanuki, it was an awesome night.

Bleary eyed yet excited, most made it to the mountain the next morning, welcoming spring conditions and warm temperatures. Gondola laps were on, Main Park was good to go with mellower-than-usual features, and Forest Trail had a long lineup of easier boxes and jibs. The sundeck at Main Lodge was the place to be for après ski, followed by Roberto’s and Sushi Rei on Saturday night.

With temperatures into the 70’s, it was spring in November on the mountain. And with warm weather forecasted in California for another week, it might be a while before the next powder day. Soon enough though, winter will return to the Eastern Sierra and everyone’s Mammoth addiction will draw them back.
