Pimp my shoe: Vans vs Nike 6.0

While we love the collaborations and bright colourways lots of footwear brands now offer, sometimes you just want something totally unique.  We checked out a couple of services offering you the chance to design your own shoes  - and not at ridiculous prices either.

Vans in the US have just relaunched their Customs site at www.vans.com/customs. Here you can choose from three shoe styles costing either $60 or $70. You can either start with one of their designs or begin your customisation with a totally blank shoe. There are loads of options to style your shoe however you like. You can change everything from the main panels to the toecaps, laces, collar lining and tongue. In a few places the only options are black or white but others offer a wide range of bold colours and even some prints and classic Vans chequerboard prints.  The shoes are available in mens, women and kids sizes.

The Nike iD system is very similar except there is a wider range of shoes on offer. We spotted some ace hi tops but our faves were the Nike 6.0 Air Mogan Mid shoes. We tried the design facility out in the UK where the shoes cost a pretty reasonable £63.60 but it's also available in many other countries. Women's specific sizes are available and again you can start with a blank canvas or you can zip through loads of designs uploaded by Nike. This site enables you to rotate your shoes to see how they're lookin and a brilliant touch is being able to choose custom text to have printed on the back of your shoes. No you can't use rude words. And yes we tried! Find your local Nike custom store at www.nike.com.
