This is a few days old but I just spotted it on The Times Surf Nation blog.

Two guys have ditched the Tube (I don’t blame them) and have taken to paddling on their surfboards down the Thames to work to commute to work. The journey takes several hours – although they can save up to an hour if they time the tides right.

No information on how they keep their copies of the Metro dry in the morning though…

Check out the story on the Evening Standard website here.

Surfing Magazine has a pretty horrifying story about the battle to catch the best waves in Peru turning nasty.  Guns have been involved as well as some pretty scary-sounding characters. Click here to read it.

Could it happen in snowboarding? Could snowfolk resort to violence to protect their access to the best powder? Here’s hoping not.

The British quest to practice boardsports without their usually essential environments continues with the development of Brushboarding.

It uses a panel of rotating brushes to create an environment where you can use surf, skate and snowboard moves.

To find out where there could be a Brushboading event near you visit the website and check out the demo below:

Ten Antiz Skateboards team members are touring Southern Spain on some old scooters at the moment – with only an Eastpak bag each to carry their gear in. That’s ten guys on ten scooters for ten days.

The Vans Cup kicked off at twilight on Friday night. The crowd was stoked and ready to get the weekends festivities started. If Northstar had a roof, I’d say it was a packed house.

Slopestyle (Saturday, March 1st)

There were a series of unfortunate events that occurred for me on Saturday. Unfortunately, I lost my pass in the village and my phone on the hill. Unfortunately, I left my camera at home and had to borrow my pal Ryan’s. Unfortunately, Ryan is VERY slow to e-mail me the photos I took. I’ll put them up as soon as he gets them to me. =)

Superpipe (Sunday, March 2nd)

Some more unfortunate events happen on Sunday. I had forgotten to charge my camera while leaving it at home and my batteries died right after the women’s finals. Fortunately, though, I was able to coax my lil Cannon into turning on for a few seconds to capture the podium.

Molly Aguirre looked very strong after her first run, but broke herself off on her second go. She tried to get up again, but fell. After sitting at the base of the pipe, she went up to go for her 3rd and final run. She gave it another go, but she was obviously hurting, as she slipped out again, unstrapped, sat on her board, and rode it down the pipe. The competition seemed to be between Molly and Elena after the first run, but with Molly injured, Elena easily secured the top women’s spot with a frontside 9. I was able to grab a few moments with Miss Amber who let me know that she hadn’t been in the pipe in over a year and that this is the best the pipe ever gets, so how could she miss it?

Superpipe Results

The event was a great thing to take part in. I can't wait to go again...I'll make sure to make it out to the parties next year.

Another update from Anna Barry, who seems to be having a blast in Europe at the moment. Here is her summary of her trip  to the Nikita Goodie Lady Session in Thyon, Valis, Switzerland.

It was a morning of all mornings that included 3 hours of driving, 3 coffee stops, 3 stops to ask for directions, 3 inches of snow/ice to be negotiated on the road, 3 forgotten passports (NB only to be discovered at border control) 3 snowboarders and one photographer had arrived in what some would call ‘style’ at Thyon, Switzerland to three foot of fresh snow.
Hmmm – by this stage I was ready for my fourth coffee of the morning and it was only 9am! We - Gilly Seagrave, Emma Lee Rogers, Jo Chastney and myself made the journey over from Morzine to attend the Nikita Goodie Lady Session organized by Nikita rider, Maude Richon.
The morning started slowly, with the park crew at Thyon working overtime to get the competition underway and deal with the 3ft of fresh snow that had fallen overnight. With a minor delay in the startof the competition – there was enough time to sneak a few cheeky tree runs in and take full advantage of the new snow.

Gilly havin a picnic!

The morning weather wasn’t the best for competition with visibility fading in and out, temperature plus wind chill pushing well into the minuses, the competition was going to be tough. A jib style section of the contest started the event off. The girls had ample choice of rails to hit consisting of a battleship, c-box, s-box and the picnic table. Girls jibbed for well over an hour, before continuing on  with the second stage of competition hitting two kickers for the afternoon - in a jam format.

The girls were throwing down, with a variety of tricks -  Cab 3’s, to big shifty lofty backside ones to some serious technical tricks on the rails. It was Jo Chastney a member of the morning madness that took the whole event scoring a fistful of Swiss Francs, a Dakine travel bag stuffed with a bunch of goodies and a wildcard entry to ‘Intergirlacktik’ held at Les 2 Alpes in April. Where she will compete against the world’s best female riders.

Winner - Jo Chastney complete with novelty cheque and crown!!

All the girls competing were stoked on the competition and all came away with a prize – a super fun day all round.
A big thanks must go out to Maude for organizing the competition, Thyon park crew for making it happen, all the girls who competed and Emma for keeping me sane whilst I was attempting to take photos in what I thought was one of the coldest days

In London, Go Skate Day was marked by the opening of Made of Skate – an exhibition exploring the history and cultural context of skateboarding footwear.

Skaters and industry folk from all over the world headed to Studio 95 at the Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane for the opening (and the free beer and cool Blueprint Oystercard holders).

The exhibition is ace – battered skate shoes and skateboards of all shapes and sizes and amazing photography and board art. You can also relax and take it all in while sitting on one of the much-loved concrete benches used by skaters at the South Bank before the area’s revamp.

The show is open 11am to 6pm until Sunday July 8 and is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area – www.madeforskate.com

Last night my boyfriend and I caught the new Element video premiere in Utah, This is my Element. It was showing at a massive multiplex cinema and as I made my way to the back of the line, I was quickly surrounded by a sea of hundreds of adolescent boys. A quick scan of the crowd verified that I was only one in maybe five girls there, and that we were pretty much the oldest people there by about 10 years. The irony of standing in that crowd on my boyfriend's 30th birthday gave me a good laugh.

The video was good with some truly impressive skating going on. Some of the guys were hitting sets of stairs the size of which you usually only see in snow vids. The highlight of the movie for me was definately Nyjah Huston's section. At only 10 years old with the most impressive set of dreads I've ever seen on anyone under the age of 18, he totally killed it on his skateboard. This kids amazing. Check out his bio on the Element site for some video clips. His style is super smooth and there's something about watching that lifetime of hair floating gracefully behind him while he's dropping massive sets of stairs.

The music was mostly instrumental, and fit really well with the cinematography. There were some really neat shots but overall the cinematography was pretty standard for a skate video. I still favor the Spike Jone's videos, but they are pretty hard to beat.

I was a little surprised by the crowd's enthusiasm for Chad Muska's part because to me he didn't seem as good as the other skaters. He kinda had a jerky spastic style. My boyfriend said he's just popular because he's old school. And then there was Bam who was just thrown in for his popularity for being a jackass.

Overall though, it was a really good video, and I recommend checking it out if you get a chance.

The Protest Wakeboard Tour hit Willen Lake at Milton Keynes on Saturday. A gang of powderroomies headed down to find out more about this wakeboarding malarkey and have a go.

After being kitted out with Protest rashguards, those of us who didn’t know one end of a cable tow from the other were squeezed into wetsuits and introduced to the kneeboard. The idea was that once you could do a couple of laps of the lake on a kneeboard using the cable tow, you’d graduate onto a real wakeboard. There was plenty of advice and coaching available from WakeMK staff and Protest riders including Hamish Lowe.

Watching a few people whiz their way round the lake, it looked pretty straightforward but in reality, it wasn’t so easy. Many of us first timers spent a fair bit of time being launched straight out of the water - minus our board.
powderroomies looking stylish as ever

Lots of people were soon ready to have a go on the real thing – some people even racking up their first tricks.

We stopped for a bit of sunbathing and a slap-up barbecue lunch (Pat Lambert put on a fine spread, being pretty well cooked by his own barbecue in the process, mind you).

The pros put on a bit of a display for us – flying through the air , doing huge spins and hitting the Protest box and kicker in the middle of the lake. By 6pm everyone was knackered so the beers were cracked open, goodie bags handed out and prizes awarded to the most progressing gals and guys of the day.

One of the pros in action
Heading off to another BBQ we tried not to think about the amount of goose poo and small fish we’d probably swallowed during our dunkings in the lake. Not that it put us off having another go in the future.

Hope to get the use of our arms back in the next few days – they currently feel like they’ve been pulled out of their sockets!

Thanks to Meena at Glacier Imports for a great day.

Keep your eyes peeled at www.glacierimports.co.uk for more Protest wakeboarding events this summer and for other Protest wakeboard tour dates in Europe visit www.protest.eu
