As the trailer says it's "for young people by young people" and the cinematography in trailer looks amazing. Much of the footage wouldn't be out of place in a standard snowboard film.

| Josh Landan and Tara Dakides talk about the film after the screening |
Sunday night Against the Grain, a documentary about Tara Dakides' life, had it's world premiere at the X-Dance film festival in Salt Lake City. Josh Landan, an award winning filmmaker, takes us back to Tara's early years as an accomplished gymnast, through her troubled adolescence, and into her years of snowboarding dominance.
Todd Richards, Pat Bridges, Chanelle Sladics, and Sal Masakela are just a few of the people interviewed during the film. The film is narrated by Pink.
Against the Grain revealed some of Tara's history that will shock most people, especially ones that think they already know about her life. We don't want to give it away but Tara's overcome much more than just a broken home to get wehere she is.
Tara says in the film, "Punk rock and skateboarding was my release and outlet."
In the question and answer session after the film, Tara admitted that she has never told anyone much of what's in the film. I spoke to Tara after the show and she told me how nervous she was about people seeing the film.
Against the Grain will be coming out next fall, but is playing in several more film festivals before it's official release.

Switch is a new Norwegian movie on general release with a plotline that’s more than a little familiar. Think the Karate Kid on a snowboard.
It’s summed up on the Internet Movie Database like this:
Mikkel (15) lives a good life with his mother in Oslo. Here he has heaps of friends and spends most of his day on a skateboard. When his mum gets a new job, Mikkel has to move to a small village and start all over. In this village skateboard no longer matters and snowboard is the new big thing. To be accepted by the new kids, Mikkel has to go into training. On top of that he falls in love with the girlfriend of the villages best snowboarder.
Check out the trailer here (in Norwegian): www.switchfilm.no

It turns out it's a film for this season by a crew of Japanese riders. Their site is www.brighta.jp Will try and get in touch with them to find out more about them and their movie. In the meantime, here's the trailer:

The closer for my week of all things snowboarding was the Australian premier of Lines at the George Cinema, St. Kilda, Melbourne. The movie is the mastermind of Axel Pauporte who was there to say a few words and introduce the move along with the Aussie Billabong team. (No one would have guessed that Billabong were involved…their massive tour bus parked out front was really inconspicuous).
After a few beverages in the bar we took our seats for all 80 minutes of big mountain goodness. Archive footage from many production companies showing the likes of Tom Burt and Mike Ranquet tackle some of the best known big mountain lines, went hand in hand with new footage from Absinthe Films featuring the next generation of riders.
Most of the focus was on a group of riders including Gigi Ruf, Jonaven Moore, Wolle Nyvelt , Travis Rice and our favourite queen of the hill Victoria Jealouse on one of their latest trips to Alaska. One on one interviews some of them illustrated the frustration of bad weather days, alongside an insight into their fears when tackling some of the most extreme Alaskan terrain.
An appearance from Mark Frank Montoya, not a name synonymous with fat pow turns was surprising! You learn something new everyday.
All in all a fantastic movie, showing that laps of the park and city handrails are not the only thing out there and that some of the most talented riders choose to stay as far away from that as possible. Ooh and I almost forgot the excellent soundtrack, including tunes from The Fratellis, The Sounds, The Kooks etc.
For trailers and more info check out www.linesthefilm.com.

With flip flops and shorts packed away for the winter, my attention was starting to focus on all things snowy. It seems everyone else was too. My email inbox has been inundated with event announcements, film showings and all things snow related.
The first to hit Melbourne was Warren Miller's latest movie, Off the Grid. Warren Miller movies have a bit of a reputation of being a bit ski biased and well I would have to say that there was no difference with this one.
However a couple of token boarders were included - Frederik Kalbermatten and Mads Jonsson had a nice section filmed in Saas Fee and Hemesdal, Norway respectivley.
Despite the lack of snowboarding still pretty interesting to watch. Regardless of whether its skiers or snowboarders it blows you mind what some people are doing. A rediculous and I think record breaking cliff drop by Jaime Pierre in Utah, was pretty unreal to watch. Exploration of Kashmir, India and intense comedy competition snowballing in Japan, broke up the audience pleasing big mountain footage in Alaska that was to be expected.
A pretty decent film, despite the shameless plugging of the films title throughout and the shocking soundtrack.
Maybe I have just been watching too many snowboarding films.
