Hi all

I'm going to Kashmir next Feb and looking for a board that's great on powder. I've been recommended the following 3 boards. Does anyone ride with these ? Will they be good for powder / free riding ?

Keen to hear your experiences or opinoions on these boards or any others

Roxy  - Eminence

Bataleon – Violenza

Salomon – Idol

I currenlty ride a 148 Salomom Lily.

Thanks in advance

Sarah

a friend rides the roxy board and says it and awesome board, though i think that she only does a bit of pow.

After looking at the specs i dont think any of the ones you mentioned are really powder boards. You wanting one that just does powder or an all mountain board ?

Fingers crossed, it will be 5 days of powder but just incase I'd say I'm after something all mountain but geared more to powder

i can't really give you feedback on the boards you mentioned... but the roxy eminence is torah bright's promodel and she's riding halfpipe a lot, so i'd guess it's more of a freestyle board. of course you can ride it in the pow aswell, but it might not be the best board for that.

i'd personally suggest checking out a board with a rocker, that's a bit longer than your board now (for more float. maybe a 152 oder 154 - you could try the snowboard length calculator here: http://www.snowboardlengthcalculator.com/), with a medium-stiff flex - i myself love twin tips, but if you're more into freeriding / all mountain and not so much interested in tricks, you'd probably be better off with a directional board.

some brands offer technologies for better edge grip, like for example the magne traction (mervin boards - roxy, lib tech, jones...) - i have ridden a roxy ollie pop with magne traction, i liked it, but i'm not 100% convinced that the grip is really that much better... on the other hand, it never had any negative effect on my riding.

if you can afford it or if you want to build up a board quiver, you might want to check out powder-specific boards like for example the salomon sick stick or jones hovercraft - there are many more other options of course! those might be even better for powder riding. i'd love to get a sick stick! :)

hope this helps! :)

Hey!  Kashmir, sounds exciting, very jealous!

As for the board situation... afraid I can't comment on those boards either (not very helpful I know) but a friend of mine rides a Burton Feelgood Flying V, it was very expensive but it was absolutely effortless in the pow.  No back leg burn for her!  I meanwhile was stuggling along on a really stiff park board with bindings set back as far as poss.  I tried her board on some pretty hard packed groomers earlier in the season and didn't really get on with it, but in the pow I could only stare longingly at it as she floated on by!

Imo a pow stick for 36" is different than one that will handle only 10".  But for big pow 16"+, look for a board with a rocker big softer shovel nose, a cambered stiffer tapered tail; like a captia charlie slasher.  You want the nose to float and stay on top, the cambered tapered tail to sink abit and to be stiff enough for drops and hits.  Unfortunately the charlie slasher only comes in a 158 and 164.  You don't need magnetraction stuff for pow.
