Countdown to the 11th Annual Burton European Open in Laax
The 11th annual Burton European Open (BEO) is kicking off in about two weeks. The BEO is the second stop of the 2009/2010 Burton Global Open Series (BGOS) and a Swatch TTR 6Star event.
Top riders and amateurs from around the world are getting ready to compete in the biggest snowboarding event in Europe from January 9 to 16, 2010. This year's theme is "Circus", so be prepared for a colorful, action-packed week in LAAX, Switzerland.
The BEO in numbers:
1 is the number of riders competing from Argentina.
4 Burton Global Open Series events are currently taking place around the world, one
in New Zealand, one in Europe, one in Canada and one in the US.
6 is the number of stars the BEO has on the Swatch TTR Tour, which means the BEO
represents the highest standard of TTR events.
9 is the age of the youngest BEO rider, Chloe Kim from USA, who placed 5th in the
Junior Halfpipe 2009.
10 is the number of BEO's in the past, one in Innsbruck (AUT), one in Fieberbrunn
(AUT), three in Livigno (ITA) and five in LAAX (SUI).
77 riders from Switzerland registered for the BEO. Once again, the host country has
the majority of riders competing.
468 is the number of registered riders in the BEO's slopestyle and halfpipe
competitions.
170 volunteers from LAAX are helping out during the 8 days of the event.
1227 hours of TV were generated from the BEO 09.
1768 is the year when Philip Astley, the founder of the first modern circus, opened
a riding school in London called Circus Maximus.
1977 is the year when Burton was founded by Jake Burton.
1999 is the year when this year's BEO main music act, The Sounds, formed their band.
8,000 is the number of guest beds which LAAX offers. 450 of them can be found in the
brand new rocksresort.
65,000 m³ of snow are needed to build the BEO's well-known superpipe and slopestyle
course.
US $125,000 is the total amount prize money for winning riders at the BEO - one of
the only snowboard events to offer equal prize money to both men and women.
