Row over Scottish winter sports ad campaign

A new ad campaign by Visit Scotland has sparked a row over its contents, according to Scotland on Sunday.

The advert portrays Scotland as a winter wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. There are segments depicting year-round ice climbing, skiing, and snowboarding.

However, tourism experts and outdoor lovers are complaining that the ad is false advertisement. The scenes shown in the short film – which is being shown all over the world – were filmed almost a decade ago.

Although you can still enjoy in winter activities in Scotland, some of the activities are now obsolete in the locations shown, because of global warming.

VisitScotland has admitted that the footage was filmed at Coire na Poite on Beinn Bhan in Applecross, Wester Ross in the 1990s.

Alan Crichton, a professional mountaineer and guide, told the newsapaper: "You can still go ice climbing in Scotland, but it won’t be of the quality that was shown in the video. We haven't had conditions like that for a while now, with the last decent winter being in 2001."

VisitScotland defended their stance saying they are trying to attract tourists to visit Scotland and enjoy the wide range of activities the country offers.
