Tara Dakides to join Leanne Pelosi at MGT Snowboard Camp in Banff
Lock up your sons and stash your terrain park egos, eight time ESPN X Games medalist and snowboarding legend Tara Dakides will be joining one of Canada’s most famed snowboarders, Leanne Pelosi, and her crew of MGT Snowboard Camp coaches to coach eager female snowboarders at Mount Norquay in Banff, Alberta on April 4 and 5.
Europe, Japan and the USA might regularly catch glimpses of these first class snow flyers in their airport lobbies and local terrain parks but their presence is still scarce in Alberta unless it’s in a magazine or a promotional bobble head at your local snowboard shop. These athletes will be present in the flesh and blood and flair to inspire the next generation as part of MGT (More Good Times) Snowboard Camp in April. And the MGT coach roster is quite stacked this year: current Dew Tour leader Spencer O’Brien, Transworld Riders Poll dominator Marie-France Roy, Rookie of the Year Raewyn Reid and Roxy Pro Robin Van Gyn have all recently coached at the camp.
“That’s MGT’s edge. Local female riders have a chance to connect with this impressive crew that is otherwise far removed from their local hill. And even if you don’t know who Tara and Leanne are or you’re new to the park…. come and ride anyway! We’ll get you started and the camaraderie and shenanigans are the best!” encourages Roxy rider Robin Van Gyn.
And why haul these busy riders into the nooks of the Canadian Rockies? The MGT crew says it’s to inspire through example and camaraderie by leveraging some of the industry’s highest-level athletes.
“Seeing a female rider perform a trick or demonstrate a skill you have been striving for is so inspiring and puts the progression wheels in motion. Everyone leaves camp with a sense of accomplishment and actual skills they can bank on.” beams MGT Camp Director Leanne “Party” Pelosi.
“These are top billing athletes!” says camp director Joanna Majcherkiewicz “Leanne [Pelosi] and I launched the camp 7 years ago and to have someone like Tara Dakides join the humble MGT crew is a massive milestone. I better conceal that “Tara4Ever” neck tattoo – might be awkward.” jokes Joanna.
If you want to be inspired by the best or steal a lock of their hair there are still some spaces in the April 4 and 5 camp at Mount Norquay. The MGT (More Good Times) Snowboard Camp is intended for female snowboarders who want to progress their riding skills with female camaraderie and under the inspirational gaze of professional snowboarders who compete globally. MGT’s winter and summer programs are designed for first time terrain park riders through to advanced terrain park and big mountain riders. Registration is available online at www.mgtsnowboardcamp.com
