Plans to build a six-seater chairlift at Mt Ruapheu, New Zealand have been postponed over concerns about its location.
The Central North Island tribe Ngati Tuwharetoa expressed concerns to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts (RAL) about the area in which the Valley Express lift is to be constructed because it trespasses into a “Gift Area.” The zone was presented by the tribe to the Crown in 1887, creating the country's first national park.
David Pilkington, chairman of RAL, is allowing more time to consult with the affected parties including Ngati Tuwharetoa. As a result, the 1.05km lift will not be ready in time for the 2008 season.
