Finnish upstart Enni Rukajärvi claimed the slopestyle title and $20,000 at the 29th Burton US Open last weekend in Vermont.
For most of the season Jamie Anderson has seemed unstoppable, and she was able to claim the Overall TTR title just by qualifying for the slopestyle finals. However she was unable to claim yet another title this season, thanks to the efforts of Enni Rukajärvi in the rainy conditions. Jamie pulled out the stops with a big switch backside 540 indy, but Rukajarvi was able to top Anderson by two points with a run including frontside 360 indy grab, a backside 540 indy grab and a Cab 540 mute grab. Young Norwegian rider Silje Norendal took third place.
Kelly Clark notched her seventh win in a row at the final US Grand Prix at Mammoth Mountain. Clark’s halfpipe win setup what should be another epic battle for the overall TTR title at the US Open next weekend.
“This is definitely a big win for me. I came away with the Dew Tour title and the Grand Prix title now. I’m looking forward to next week and seeing if I can’t step it up in the TTR and the Global Open series,” Clark said.
Clark’s winning run was a front 9, back 5, front 7, cab 7 and stalefish. She was followed by Gretchen Bleiler who landed her back 9. Canadian Sarah Conrad rounded out the podium.
Jamie Anderson racked up another win at the first ever women’s slopestyle competition at the Oakley Arctic Challenge in Norway. Her run included a noseslide, a 50-50 bs 180 mute, a huge ss bs 540, bs 360, a tailslide 270 out and a bs 540 indy on the last jump. Besides the $15,000 first prize, Anderson also earned herself a spot at the 2012 World Championships in Oslo.
After receiving her trophy, Jamie Anderson remarked, “I was never crowned the prom queen, but finally I got my crown.”
A strong showing by the other women in the field included 720s and an attempted backside 900. Canadian Spencer O’Brien placed second, and Jenny Jones added another top 3 finish to her season.
The story of Winter X Games 15 thus far may be the success of the rookies. Saturday night, rookie Alex Schlopy took the top prize in Skiing Big Air and Sunday morning, fellow rookie Enni Rukajarvi took the gold in Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle.
With the win, Rukajarvi not only won her first medal, but she is the first female snowboarder from Finland to medal at Winter X Games.
