So after a few days checking out Banff, we headed along the highway, through more incredible mountains and past the Colombia Icefields, to Jasper.
 
Talk about chalk and cheese. Where as Banff is a slick, modern town with a Louis Vuitton and Gap, Jasper is a low level, simple small town with very few chain stores or restaurants and some comedy retro accommodation.
 
The railway line runs down the opposite side of the high street - carrying a succession of huge industrial trains plus the occasional tourist carrier.

I've never been to a ski resort out of season - until now. I'm in Banff, Alberta - and it's jawdroppingly gorgeous.

 
Jasper's Marmot Basin in Alberta is taking on a significant ski lift development for the upcoming season, and it's not even summer yet! What's being worked on? It's the longest new high-speed quad chairlift in the Alberta Canadian Rockies.
 
The slope length is approximately 2,300 meters and a vertical rise of 596 meters, and replaces the Tranquilizer Chair and the Kiefer T-Bar.

First Canadian resorts open for the season
