Torah Bright Cutting the Ribbon (photo: Perisher)
Perisher Resort in Australia renamed their halfpipe after Olympic Gold Medalist Torah Bright during the 2010 Australian Junior Series Halfpipe event last Saturday.  Perisher is the official training facility for the Olympic Institute of Australia.

Torah was on hand at the resort, where she spent much of her early career, for the ribbon cutting and to try out the pipe that now bears her name.

I read in The Age that Olympic gold medal hopeful, Aussie Torah Bright was hospitalised last week with her second concussion in three days. Officials said snowboarder Bright was taken to hospital for evaluation after a crash forced her to withdraw from the Winter X Games Superpipe in Aspen.

Just days after Powderroom reported in this here blog about her double cork attempts. It seems Bright was reportedly injured trying this risky double cork trick - a first in a women's SuperPipe competition - which she was rumoured to be working on for Vancouver.

The Aussie snow season has kicked off this long weekend with some early snowfalls, which hopefully can only mean good things for the season ahead.

Down in Victoria, there has been some great falls, with 15cm reported at Mt. Buller, up in New South Wales they have had a little more with Perisher reporting 21cm in the last 24hrs. Its seems the forecast is good and the snow is still falling, building a good base early on. With snowfall predicted through til Wednesday, I think I may be getting a little excited, the maiden voyage for my new snowboard is not far off...

The Australian snow season usually starts in June but Mt Buller are opening this weekend - an incredible five weeks early. The resort has a 35cm (14 inch) base to open with.

This is the earliest Mt Buller has ever opened. The closest was 45 years ago when it opened on May 16 in 1964.

A lift ticket will cost $20 which includes access to the new six-seat Holden Express chairlift. Season passes are also valid.

No other resorts in the area have announced plans to open early, although Mt Hotham has recently received 40cm of new snow and recorded Victoria's coldest temperature ever in -8ºC.
