So after a few days checking out Banff, we headed along the highway, through more incredible mountains and past the Colombia Icefields, to Jasper.
 
Talk about chalk and cheese. Where as Banff is a slick, modern town with a Louis Vuitton and Gap, Jasper is a low level, simple small town with very few chain stores or restaurants and some comedy retro accommodation.
 
The railway line runs down the opposite side of the high street - carrying a succession of huge industrial trains plus the occasional tourist carrier.

I've never been to a ski resort out of season - until now. I'm in Banff, Alberta - and it's jawdroppingly gorgeous.

Marmot Basin installing longest high speed quad in the Alberta Rockies

Jasper's Marmot Basin in Alberta is taking on a significant ski lift development for the upcoming season, and it's not even summer yet! What's being worked on? It's the longest new high-speed quad chairlift in the Alberta Canadian Rockies.
 
The slope length is approximately 2,300 meters and a vertical rise of 596 meters, and replaces the Tranquilizer Chair and the Kiefer T-Bar.

Construction begins on new spa at Whistler

Construction on the new Le Scandinave Spa Whistler is now underway. The Spa will bring Scandinavian-style baths to Whistler-Blackcomb, and will be located one mile north of Whistler Village. Construction is scheduled to finish in the fall of this year.

Finger pointed at Canada's RCMP over death of skier

A couple from Montreal spent nine days in the backcountry in British Columbia before the RCMP decided to launch a search.

The couple, Gilles Blackburn, 51, and his wife Marie-Josee Fortin, 44, were staying at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort in Golden, B.C. The couple were experienced skiers. They left on February 15 and got lost when they went out of bounds. They tried to find their way back leaving SOS signs behind them. The only food the couple had were two granola bars.

MGT Snowboard camp at Grouse Mountain wraps up

The MGT Snowboard camp crew sent us this write up of the two-day all girl’s camp they held at Grouse Mountain, North Vancouver at the weekend:

 30cm – 40cm fell each night during this past weekend at Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver. Vancouver’s metamorphosis into a snow-cave resulted in a pillow party for what is usually strictly a terrain park camp.

MGT Snowboard Camp coaches Marie-France Roy, Leanne Pelosi, Raewyn Reid, Robin Van Gyn and Joanna Majcherkiewicz had campers throwing themselves off any feature producing some heavy bails and first time pillow and cliff experiences.
