This weekend, while Christchurch and the rest of the Canterbury Plains were underneath the layer of low cloud, we were up in the sunshine snowboarding.  While the snowpack on Saturday was rather bulletproof, it was managed to warm up and soften up on Sunday.  Spins weren't working too well for me this weekend and after falling on your face a few times, I decided this just wasn't the wee

This weekend, while Christchurch and the rest of the Canterbury Plains were underneath the layer of low cloud, we were up in the sunshine snowboarding.

When you no longer have the luxury of lots of mid-week riding, you have to make do with weekend warrior shred.  Despite school holidays and long lift lines, we still managed to have so much fun with sunny blue skies, no wind, a good crew and good home baking.

Last weekend, there was no riding partly because I was a bit lazy (when riding here on the weekend, it's a 6:30 a.m. wake-up) and partly because the weather was very average.  This weekend, I wasn't going to let a bit of rain and lack of visibility stop me.

Saturday's forecast and weather report was completely off.  The report called for clouds, wind and the occassional snow/rain shower, but instead it was beautiful...no wind and sunny, without a cloud in sight.  Although more than 50 cms of snow had fallen during the week, all the freshies had been ridden on the Friday.  Still, Saturday was gorgeous.

So it begins. After returning from Utah in April, I have spent most of my time thinking about the snow. And finally, the Southern Hemisphere season in  New Zealand starts.

Coronet Peak in Queenstown was the first of the resorts to open on the 5th of June. So we thought we'd head on down and celebrate. Turns out, we weren't the only ones. Many of the
regular riders at my hill also made the 7 hour drive down for the weekend.

New Zealand's killer season start is continuing with Mt Hutt planning to open this Saturday - a whole two weeks early. This week they've had a 25cm dump, giving them a decent 100cm base to kick off the season with.
