Since I’m off work till tuesday, I’ve offered to write a Christmas Maths quiz for the department for the last week of term.

Without trying to make it sound like I’m asking you lot to do all my work for me, I wondered if you’ve got any ideas for questions – I’ve got quite a few off the internet (things like “How many ships came sailing by on Christmas day?”) but getting a bit stuck. It needs to be only loosely related to Maths (number/date answers for example)

reckon you lot’ll come up with more sensible suggestions than the guys…

Cheers!

What age is it for – are we talking calculus or adding up on our fingers and toes?
I’m sure we can come up with some festive themed challenges.

And can they use calculators?

- how many total items do you get for the 12 days of christmas? (a partridge in a pear tree counts as 1)

How about the total number of degrees a snowboarder turns if he/she does a halfpipe run inclding two 720s, a 540 and a 360?

A snowboard shop has just got its new stock for the season. How long would the line be if you laid all the snowboards end to end if you had three 146s, four 150, five 151s, six 153s, eight 157s, four 159s and three 161s.

How many calories a box of chocolates if there are 50 in a caramel, 40 in a strawberry cream, 45 in a hazenut whirl, and 43 in a nougat and you get 7 of each per box.

like that one, Lorene.

They’re allowed calcs if they have one, but if they haven’t it’s tough.

We’re talking 11-15, but probably counting on fingers & toes – with the exception of my bright bunch of year 8s (awww, sweeties. Horrible, noisy sweeties, but at least they’re good at maths… hehehe), the rest of them have trouble with subtraction…

And…

How about something about the interest you’d pay on your credit card on your Christmas shopping if you paid 15% apr and you spent £550 and paid £100 off before the end of the month.

Or something about the balls of wool your granny would need to knit you a jumper with a reindeer on it.

I’ll go away now.

hehe, thanks Lucie!

I like the snowboarding ones – they all know I’m a “pretty good snowboarder” (*swagger*) from when I took a bunch up to Tam :D

If you have 42 baubles (sp) on the tree and there are 7 in each box how many boxes will you need?

The Christmas cake has been cut into 16 pieces and 3/4 has already been eaten. How many slices are left!

If you can build one and a half snowmen in 1hour, how many complete snowmen can you finish in 4hours?

:P :P
Edit: they seem a bit basic for 11-15yr olds!! ah well they can be the easy ones to lull them into thinking its gonna be dead easy! ;)
